Advantages of a Frameless Shower Enclosure
Easy Maintenance: A frameless shower enclosure is easy to maintain – it can be cleaned to “like new” condition after years of use. There is very little metal to deteriorate and show its age.
Durability: A frameless shower enclosure will last three to four times longer than a framed glass shower. A frameless shower enclosure is made up of thicker glass than a framed enclosure. The glass is usually 3/8″ to ½” thick tempered and polished safety glass. Such glass is strong and sturdy enough to use with minimal metal bracketing and support.
Opening: A frameless shower enclosure will have a door that can open in and out versus a framed shower door which only opens out or glides on a slider. This may be a consideration given the configuration and space allotted to your bathroom.
Appearance: There is no getting around it. A frameless shower enclosure looks very attractive. You and your family will appreciate the beauty of a frameless shower enclosure as will potential buyers when it comes time to selling your home. (Studies show that bathrooms and kitchens are the most carefully inspected areas of the home by prospective buyers. A fresh, beautiful and well-appointed bathroom goes a long way to convincing a buyer to make a purchase.)
Your bathroom is a reflection of your style. Framed Pivot Doors
Another bathroom configuration issue is how the door will be positioned. With a framed glass shower door the door can be positioned at almost any angle using special pivoting trim. (On the other hand, with a frameless shower enclosure the door hinges will only allow for it to rest at 180, 135, or 90 degrees to the hinge panel.) |

Glass Shower Doors Have Traditional Appeal
Customarily, framed glass shower doors have a metal frame or trim around a panel of glass. They are used for both shower and tub enclosures. Many homeowners will continue to choose them over frameless glass shower enclosures because of their traditional look and lower cost. There are many cases when framed glass shower doors make sense because of budgetary considerations or the structural configuration of the bathroom being renovated. Your choice may well come down to personal preference.
Advantages of Framed Glass Shower Doors
Cost: The price-tag of a bathroom renovation is always an important consideration, and for those on a limited budget, who still want an element of luxury, glass shower doors may be the perfect solution. Framed glass shower doors cost significantly less than frameless to install, and a brushed nickel or gold finish on a shower frame can look very handsome.
Variety: Perhaps the biggest advantage of framed glass shower doors over frameless shower enclosures is the variety of choice available. Manufacturers have come a long way since the ‘70s when only gold or silver trim was available for framed glass shower doors. Today, the metal trim comes in many colors and styles and there is also a large selection of glass finishes offered. You can find metallic finishes of every shade to seamlessly integrate with your current bathroom hardware; you can also find glass shower door options ranging from clear to frosted and with many different decorative options.
Configuration: An important consideration when installing glass shower doors is how close the shower head will be to the door, because of the splashing of water. A framed door is made to seal shut, whereas a frameless door has a quarter inch gap around it. (When far enough away from the shower head this isn’t an issue, but if the shower head is close to the shower door, it will be. For sliding glass shower doors, again the splashing is not an issue because the glass shower door panels will overlap.)
